TRNC CONDEMNS GREEK CYPRIOT PROPAGANDA IN CL MATCH

Nicosia, 27 November 08 (T.A.K.):-TRNC has condemned Greek Cypriot side for involving political propaganda into the UEFA Champions League match between a Greek Cypriot and German team last night.

“This is an indication of the level of Greek Cypriot unchanged mentality and fanaticism” said Turgay Avci the Foreign Minister of TRNC.

Banners showing Famagusta and the fenced area of Maras (Varosha) were distributed before the match between Greek Cypriot Anorthosis and Germany’s Werder Bremen.

Varosha in Famagusta remains fenced since 1974, after Turkey intervened in Cyprus to stop wide spread killing of Turkish Cypriots.

Avci in a written statement about the incident said that such provocative acts would not only damage the negotiations that were going on to resolve the Cyprus problem but also the relations between the two communities.

“It is also understood how far is the Greek Cypriots to the aim of building a shared future on the island by the two communities” added The FM.

He said that it was because of the negative stance of the Greek Cypriot administration that the Turkish Cypriot people and Greek Cypriot people has not yet reached the maturity of reconciliation.

FM Avci also criticized the UEFA for not showing any reaction to the events that took place

“We strongly condemned them for remaining unresponsive” he said, reminding that social activities like sportive events were used for uniting people not for spreading enmity. (ID/RU)
